Black Gold League (BGL) - a non profit organization was steam rolled in 2013 February at Mudigere, Chikmagalur District, Karnataka with the aim of rejuvenating black pepper productivity in the growing states of India. While the black pepper yield in Kerala has plummeted to an abysmally low level, the trend in Karnataka is strikingly different with the yield levels soaring to a historical high, thanks to BGL. The emphasis is on training programs that harp on scientific and ethical black pepper cultivation by promoting good agricultural practices through field demonstrations and technical inputs from scientists. The entire gamut of practices that encompass black pepper cultivation and the intricacies involved in handling unforeseen difficulties arising due to nutritional disorders, pest and disease outbreaks etc are covered by the training program.
It is expected that such programs will culminate in dramatic increases in black pepper productivity due to the cascading effects of increased production, improved quality and enhanced connectivity to niche markets. The training programs also serve as a vital platform for a seamless farmer-farmer interaction which would further enhance their technical, cultivation and marketing skills.
